6. POA Techniques

Guide to Product Ownership Analysis

This chapter describes important techniques used in POA. These techniques are widely practiced by Product Owners and other POA Professionals in their daily work. Practitioners apply their experience and judgment in determining which techniques are appropriate for a given context, and how best to apply each technique.

Techniques are purposely described with different levels of detail in this chapter:

1. Important techniques that are described in other IIBA publications and can be used for product ownership analysis. They are contextualized for POA in this Guide by with descriptions on how they are applicable for each POA domain. They can also be referred to in their original source:

  • Backlog Refinement
  • Business Cases
  • Collaborative Games
  • Decision Modelling and Analysis
  • Focus Groups
  • Job Stories
  • Kano analysis
  • Metrics and Key Performance Indicators
  • Non-Functional Requirements Analysis
  • Personas
  • Real Options
  • Reviews
  • Risk Analysis and Management
  • Spikes
  • Stakeholder List and Maps
  • Story Mapping
  • Value Modelling
  • Visioning

2. Important techniques that are described in other IIBA publications, but require a more detailed explanation for use within POA because there are important differences in how they can be applied:

  • Minimal Viable Product
  • Product Backlog Management
  • Product Roadmap
  • Value Stream Mapping

3. Important techniques that are critical for POA and are not described in other IIBA publications are described in more detail:

  • Customer Journey Mapping
  • Definition Concepts (Ready, Delivery, Done)
  • Empathy Maps
  • Human Centred Design for Products
  • Problem Definition and Analysis
  • Product-Market Fit
  • Value Proposition Canvas

Note: Additional techniques are described in the domains. They are more nuanced and generally applicable to the specific domain where they are described. They are not the only techniques that can be used within a domain but are very likely to be used by product teams.
